    Challenges to Municipal Recycling in Greece: Effective Policies

    This dissertation was written as part of the MSc in Energy Law, Business, Regulation and Policy at the International Hellenic University. This dissertation aims at addressing the pressing need for more effective recycling policies in Greece, a country struggling to implement measures towards significantly improving municipal recycling. Throughout the years, Greece remains at a standstill while other EU member states are not far from meeting the ambitious recycling targets set for 2030. The goal of this dissertation is to propose radical and effective policies that will enhance recycling rates and ensure Greece can meet its environmental commitments. Introducing stricter regulatory frameworks, providing financial incentives for municipalities, and creating public awareness campaigns are examples of policies that could lead to significant improvements. By understanding the existing setbacks, this research will offer practical recommendations that will facilitate the transition towards a more sustainable waste management system in Greece.
