Τεκμήριο Exploring Thermal Elongation in Plastic Materials for Adaptive DesignPantazis, AlexandrosThis dissertation was written as part of the MSc in Strategic Product Design at the International Hellenic University. It investigates the thermal elongation behavior of polymeric materials, with emphasis on 3D-printed specimens and their relevance to adaptive design. Thermal elongation is examined both theoretically and experimentally, focusing on how temperature variation affects dimensional stability in commonly used engineering materials such as PLA, ABS, ASA and PETG. The study reviews established and emerging measurement techniques, identifying the need for an accessible experimental system capable of capturing small thermal-induced displacements in plastic specimens. To address this need, a low-cost thermal elongation measurement platform was designed, developed and evaluated. The platform combines a hot plate, temperature sensors, a digital microdial gauge and an Arduino-based data acquisition system to record temperature and displacement versus time during controlled heating. Theoretical elongation values were calculated using literature-based CTE ranges and compared with experimental measurements obtained from the specimens. The results show that all specimens exhibit an initial elongation phase followed by stabilization, while differences between materials and infill configurations confirm that the polymer properties, internal geometry and additive manufacturing parameters affect the results.
