Τεκμήριο 3D Printed Biodegradable Esophageal Stent(2024-06-18) Profitiliotis, ThomasThis dissertation was written as part of the Msc in Strategic Product Design at the International Hellenic University. Esophageal stenting is used in the palliative therapy of dysphagia to patients suffering from esophageal diseases. Nonetheless, the currently available metallic and plastic stents aren’t patient specific and come with different complications, such as perforation and migration to the stomach. To reduce these complications, I designed a biodegradable esophageal stent with different lattice structures. The designed stents were 3D printed using varioshore TPU. Tensile strength, nanoindentation, selfexpansion and anti-migration tests were conducted to ensure that both the material and the designs meet the required specifications. Tensile strength testing revealed that printing the material at a lower temperature produced a stronger and more ductile material. Similarly, nanoindentation testing revealed that printing the material at a lower temperature produced a more stiff and deformable material. Although the selfexpansion test revealed that the lattice structure of the stents had no influence on compressibility or recovery, the printing temperature did, with stents printed at higher temperatures being less resistive to compression. The anti-migration test findings showed that increasing the printing temperature can affect the stent's expansion within the esophagus and that the design of the lattice structures can improve the stent's resistance to migration. The results suggest that the 3D printed esophageal stent with lattice structures has the potential to be used in the treatment of esophageal diseases.
